Notice to vacate
A notice to vacate is formal written notice that a tenant intends to move out, or that a tenancy is ending. It starts the clock on the move-out process and is usually required a set number of days before the move-out date.
What typically follows
- The notice period runs (often 30 or 60 days, per the lease and local law).
- A move-out inspection is scheduled.
- The security deposit is reconciled and returned, less any allowed deductions.
Required notice periods are set by the lease and by state and local law. This is general information, not legal advice.
